4/17/2009 Guaranty Trust Loan Advert
Recently a fraudulent email that appeared to be from Guaranty Trust was detected (see below). If you responded to the email with the requested information, please be very cautious. This is a preliminary phishing scam. We wanted to show you this scam because it is an initial introduction where a criminal gathers basic information to then tailor a more sophisticated phishing attempt to the target. Responding to this type of a scam confirms to the criminals they have a valid email address and now have basic information about you that makes you a target.

Online Fraud Sample

To protect against this kind of attack, it is recommended to be cautious when responding to unsolicited emails or going to any site that you do not go to directly through your favorites or by typing in the URL. It is also critical to have anti-virus and anti-spyware software running on your computer and should be kept current. Likewise, ensure that all security updates for your operating system (Windows, Mac, etc…) are properly applied. The combination of these will help protect you and your personal information, but cannot guarantee absolute protection.

If you are presented with an email that requests sensitive information or directs you to a website that requests that you update or confirm your personal data (such as your mother’s maiden name, account number, etc.), please do not provide any information. Guaranty Bank will never ask for personal information to be sent back to us via an unsolicited email.
